REFUSE AND RECYCLING SERVICES
TO BE IN EFFECT FROM 25 MARCH 2020 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
In the interests of restricting the movement of people and protecting IWK staff, the Kaikoura Resource Recovery Centre the landfill will be closed to the public, and no recycling or reuse services will be provided either at the centre, at kerbside or at any of the other rural recycling facilities.
The following services for disposal of refuse (which will include materials that were previously accepted for recycling) will instead be provided free of charge:
• A weekly kerbside collection of refuse (with glass presented as a separate refuse item) will be provided to areas that had previously received kerbside collections of recycling. A maximum of TWO completely sealed bags of refuse, with a maximum weight of 10kg per bag will be collected from outside each property. Glass will still be collected separately in your green recycling bin – ONE bin per household per collection – please DO NOT put glass in your black bags. Any exceedance of these limits will result in bags or bins being left outside the property.
• Skips for collection of bagged refuse will be provided for 3 hours on one defined day per week at each rural recycling facility. Whilst the skip is present it will be attended by a member of IWK staff, and a maximum of TWO bags of refuse per property will be permitted to be dumped. There will be a separate skip for glass at each site. Please remember your social distancing, if the skip is being used by another person, let them finish disposal and then proceed to the skip yourself.

As some of you will spend time in your garden during the lockdown we will be offering a fadge drop off and pickup for greenwaste within the Kaikoura town boundaries.
Please phone IWK if you are interested in this service, there will be a $14 charge for drop off and pick up.
We will accept bank transfer payment options for this, with service provided after the funds appear in our bank account.
These changes reflect the extraordinary times that we are in, and further changes may also occur in the future, but at this stage it is not possible to predict what and when these may be.
ALL ESSENTIAL SERVICE BUSINESS CUSTOMERS OF IWK WILL BE CONTACTED TO DISCUSS HOW WE CAN ASSIST YOUR BUSINESS DURING THE LOCKDOWN.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT AT ANY POINT, PREFERABLY BY PHONE (03 319 7148).
We have received a lot of repetitive questions over the last couple of days. So we have put a few of them together. We will no longer be answering these questions individually on any facebook posts. If you remain unclear on any of these activities please private message or pick up the phone and call.
✅What do I do with my waste?
You need to put all your refuse into a black bag (recycling, general rubbish, food scraps) and seal it. Limit of 10kg per black bag
Glass needs to be in a green crate. PLEASE don’t put glass in black bags as it may cause them to rip and injure our team as well as exposing them to your waste directly.
You need to have it at the kerbside by 8am.
As you can see in this photo that was taken yesterday PLEASE don't put anything dangerous in your black bags. We have an amazing team providing this essential service to our community and they need to carry it out safely.
✅Will you provide us with black bags?
No. Local grocery stores stock these.
✅Will Kerbside collection continue?
Yes our kerbside collections will still be happening on usual kerbside days. The refuse we are collecting has changed but the kerbside days have not.
Please have your 2 x black bags and glass crate at the kerbside by 8am on your usual kerbside day.
✅Can we leave out our food scrap buckets?
No, in taking every measure to prevent the spread of Covid-19 we cannot safely collect household food scraps. Please put them into your black bags or bury/compost in your garden.
✅Are we no longer recycling?
Due to the current national lock down and Alert Level 4 status in New Zealand, we cannot collect and hand sort recycling.
If your household wants to stockpile recycling until we are permitted to open the recycling yard again, you can do so. That is a decision you will need to make in your household.
We will be posting videos and links on how to reduce your waste during a lock down on our website and Facebook page.
✅Will this make our rates decrease?
IWK has absolutely no authority over rates. Rates are set by Kaikoura District Council.
✅What about kerbside collections outside of Kaikoura Township?
All kerbside collections will continue on the usual day.
Oaro/ Peketa/ Goosebay/ Hapuku Village – All on Wednesday.
Kaikoura Township - On Thursday
Please have your two black bags and green crate of glass kerbside by 8am.
✅What if we don’t get kerbside collection?
Skips for collection of bagged refuse will be provided on one defined day per week at each rural recycling facility. Whilst the skip is present it will be attended by IWK staff, and a maximum of TWO bags of refuse per property will be permitted to be dumped. There will be a separate skip for glass at each site. PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR SOCIAL DISTANCING. If the skip is being used by another person, let them finish disposal and then proceed to the skip yourself.
