Recycling @ IWK

GLASS RECYCLING

At IWK, we proudly offer a comprehensive range of glass recycling services for the efficient collection of bottles and jars. Utilizing recycled glass in the production of new containers means significant energy savings, lower emissions, and the conservation of precious natural resources. Join us in making a positive impact on the environment through responsible glass recycling.

E-WASTE & METALS

Visit our metal area by the weighbridge to drop off various metal products and objects. The bins are clearly labelled for splitting various metals. As well as accepting old car and household batteries we accept computers, TVs, printers, cars, fridges and various other metals and electrical items. Larger loads need to come over the weighbridge so we can inspect your load.  If you are unsure then just flag down one of our friendly staff and they will be happy to help.

Q: What household items can be dropped off for Recycling?

At the Resource Recovery Centre you can drop-off anything that you can put out for collection from the kerbside. This includes:

  • Cardboard and Paper

  • Milk bottles (2), All clear plastics (1), Janitorial plastics (2), All 5's.

  • Tin and aluminium cans

  • Glass bottles and jars - no windscreens or pane glass

CARDBOARD & PAPER
RECYCLING

Cardboard makes up a huge volume of our recycling each month. We can dispose of all your business or household cardboard waste, either by dropping off at the recycling depot and using the bins provided, by kerbside collection or we can arrange pickup from your business premises. All cardboard boxes and packaging must be clean, flattened and tied into manageable bundles (kerbside & business collection only)

PLASTIC RECYCLING

We can recycle your PET (1) drink and HDPE (2) milk bottles, and PP (5) containers, as part of our mixed recycling service.

Other types of separated plastics (3, 6 and 7) are more difficult to recycle and/or manufacturers struggle to make any profit from them. This makes these types of plastics currently uneconomical to recycle. Plastics contaminated with food or liquid residue can also restrict the recyclability so always make sure your acceptable recyclable plastics are clean prior to disposal into our recycling bins.

PLASTIC FILM
RECYCLING

IWK collects soft plastics and plastic film (shrink/pallet wrap) each month and arranges for this to be made into new products. By recycling your plastics, you will reduce your cost of waste to landfill and ensure that an important resource is not wasted.

ELECTRICAL GOODS RECYCLING

From August 2018, we are able to sell small kitchen electrical goods in our shop. All the items have been tagged and tested for electrical compliance by our staff on site. This is awesome news for diversion! We a huge range of products that come into the ReStore shop and we can put them back into the community, giving them a second life.

TYRE RECYCLING

As a Tyrewise Collection site partner the public can drop off unwanted tyres with you (limit of 5).

As a partner of Tyrewise, the public can have confidence in what happens to end-of-life tyres. The tyres will be managed from collection to processing and will not end up dumped, stockpiled or landfilled.

PAPER TOWELS &
COMPOSTABLES

The move away from plastic packaging has resulted in an increase in compostable alternatives for every day items such as coffee cups, food trays, cutlery, food packaging, etc. We at IWK are continually looking at ways to provide positive environmental outcomes whilst disposing of this kind of waste. We will continue to pass on our findings to our consumers.

FOOD WASTE
RECYCLING

IWK can accept a wide range of food and compostable material in its food waste recycling service, including fruit and vegetables, leftover food waste, solid dairy products, coffee grounds, paper towels and napkins, and certified commercially compostable packaging and tableware. Our composting process ensures all food waste is turned into nutrient-rich compost. Using IWK’s food waste recycling service ensures food waste and compostable material is not sent to landfill.

CLEAN FILL

What can you do with Clean Fill in Kaikoura?

Kaikoura District council are currently investigating options for a Clean Fill site in the district.  At the moment, there is no council controlled Clean Fill site, however we suggest that you post on the Kaikoura Noticeboard (Facebook) if you have Clean Fill that needs a home, as there is a large rural community that may want this for their farm site.

What is Clean Fill?

Clean fill is material that will not have an adverse effect on people or the environment when buried.

This includes:

  • natural materials - clay, soil and rock, or brick

  • other inert materials - free from anything that could be/produce hazards to people or the environment.

GREEN WASTE

It makes sense then that we also offer clients a GREEN waste solution that is environmentally responsible.

We guarantee that all uncontaminated green waste is collected, processed and returned to a biological state for reuse as compost. By dropping off your green waste at the designated area you are helping to make a difference and keep readily useable resource out of landfill.

The obvious exclusions of flax bamboo and noxious weeds apply but we can take your biological (no plastic packaging) food waste e.g. vegetables, fruit etc. (excluding uncooked meat, fish and poultry.)
