Deep Dive Into Recycling

Let's take a deeper look at Recycling...

Recycling is crucial for preserving our environment and reducing waste. At IWK, we are dedicated to implementing sustainable recycling practices that contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet. With ongoing research and development in New Zealand and beyond, we are exploring innovative ways to enhance waste management and recycling opportunities. Together with our partners, we are committed to creating a better future for both the environment and our communities.

To learn more about what happens to your recycling visit our "What Happens To Your Recycling" page.

TYRES
Let's move forward to a future without tyre waste...

Be part of the journey to create innovative, solutions for the 6.5 million end-of-life tyres Kiwis produce every year.

From 1 September 2024, when Tyrewise became fully operational, only registered collection sites are able to accept end-of-life tyres from the public. IWK are a Collection Site partner through Tyrewise.

This means you can drop off up to 5 tyres per day, per vehicle.  Tyres must be clean and off the rims. Please see IWK staff prior to dropping off your tyres.

As a Tyrewise Collection site partner the public can drop off unwanted tyres with you (limit of 5).

As a partner of Tyrewise, the public can have confidence in what happens to end-of-life tyres. The tyres will be managed from collection to processing and will not end up dumped, stockpiled or landfilled.

E-Waste | Electrical Items | Metals

In our digital age, electronic waste is a growing concern, and we're here to provide a sustainable solution to E-Waste recycling. From outdated computers and mobile phones to household appliances, we ensure that your E-Waste and whiteware are responsibly recycled. Give your old electronics a new life and recycle them with us.

A fee is charged for some items due to the complex nature of recycling (time and specialist equipment required to dismantle them into separate components to be recycled).

Batteries

Batteries power our lives but can harm the environment if not disposed of properly. Our battery recycling service recycles over 20 subtypes of domestic, commercial and industrial batteries. From household batteries to industrial units, we ensure safe and efficient processing through our partner Phoenix.

Whiteware & Gas Bottles

Whiteware

  • Why do we charge?

    • We only charge for fridges and freezers so that they can be degassed safely and this gas is captured which ensures no harm to the environment.

Gas Bottles

  • Why do we charge?

    • We need to cover costs to get gas bottles degassed safely.  All gas from our gas bottle degassing is captured so there is no harm to the environment.

Paper & Cardboard

We recycle all grades of paper including office paper, specialist printer’s paper, newspapers and magazines. We can dispose of all your business or household paper waste. Any soiled paper goods cannot be recycled, so please ensure goods are clean and dry.

Recycling Glass Bottles
Glass - Windows & Doors - Windscreens

We can currently recycle glass bottles and jars only.  We undertake colour glass sorting as part of our Kerbside collection and up at the Resource Recovery Centre.

We are currently working on a solution for windscreens and pane (window) glass.  Until we have a solution, please wrap your glass and put in your rubbish bag.

Soft Plastics & Lids

We understand and agree with you all that we should be able to recycle these items, we have approached the organisations running these programmes and have indicated our strong interest in being part of these programmes.

The Lids programme is in the early stages and they aren’t ready to launch this nationally just yet and Softplastics is the same for the South Island at this time.
